LIVING OUT THE NEW LIFE IN CHRIST

(4:17–24)

Paul moves here into the heart of Christian ethics, detailing how God expects us to conduct ourselves as part of the new humanity Christ has created in this new age. This entire section (4:17–5:21) is a midrashic expansion1 of 4:1 (“live a life worthy of the calling you have received”), detailing what God expects for such a life. Living this new life means turning our back on our former life of sin (vv. 17–19, 22) and embracing the new self that has made us a part of Christ’s new creation (v. 24). The ethical mandates that follow communicate the way in which we can attain this lofty goal and be worthy of all that the Triune Godhead has done for us. We are dealing with Christian conduct, the practical outworking in our daily actions of the new life God has given us.
